His Majesty the King and His Holiness the Je Khenpo along with several Rinpoches and Trulkus had graced the inaugural ceremony of the Gelephu Landmark water supply project on 23rd December 2023. The project implementation commenced on 22nd April 2022, and has been successfully completed on time at a cost of Nu. 375 million, saving substantial amount against initial estimated cost of Nu. 477 million. The project has been implemented by Gelephu Thromde in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure Development, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with technical expertise support from M/s. FINE Inc, South Korea, and M/s. Druksell Co. Ltd. Over the course of implementation, over 330 Desuups have contributed their voluntary workforce with technical guidance from project engineers and technicians.
The system components built include water mainlines connecting a robust intake structure at the source to pre-sedimentation tank, a state-of-the-art water treatment plant, and more than 9.7 kilometers of distribution mainlines connecting to existing water service reservoir tanks.
The project will benefit over 60,000 people across Gelephu Thromde and partial areas under Samtelling and Gelephu Gewogs under Sarpang District. It is considered to have an exemplary construction quality while it also skilled many Desuups in water supply project construction aspects.
